After Karna's coronation as Angh Raj, he would be with Duryodhana most of the time. They would play a game of dice in the evening.
It was one such evening when the sun had set off and it was getting dark. Lamps were lit all around. At some point, Duryodhana had to leave momentarily.
Duryodhana's wife Bhanumati, who was passing by saw Karna waiting for her husband and continued her husband's game. The mood was jovial and they were having fun. At some point, they had a casual quarrel about whose turn was it next?
Playfully, Karna tried to snatch the dies from her hand. While they were wriggling, Bhanumati's dress got misplaced and her pearl necklace was broken. The pearls were scattered everywhere on the floor.
At that instant, Duryodhana entered and found his wife with his friend in a compromising position with their clothes entangled and pearls all around.
Queen Bhanumati, who knows her husband is in front of her, is shocked thinking what will her husband now think of her. Seeing her shocked state, Karna too is shocked when he sees Duryodhana; he doesn’t know what to do as he is deeply distressed beyond words on his action.
Karna was embarrassed; Here he was, in the royal chamber, playing a game of dice with his friend's wife, and as if this was not enough, he had the audacity to catch her clothes. Surely, Duryodhana would not tolerate such immodesty. Dumb-folded and transfixed, Karna immediately stands in front of Duryodhana for punishment.
Duryodhana asked Karna what the quarrelling was for. Upon knowing the reason, as both she and Karna look down sheepishly, unable to meet Duryodhana's eyes, Duryodhana (the Kaurava scion) only asks, “Should I just gather the pearl beads or string them as well”.
Thus, he cracked a joke and laughed aloud and continued playing.
Both Bhanumati and Karna had misjudged him. He had implicit faith and great love for his queen and greater was his faith on his friend Karna. He does not suspect or get angry with Karna but instead helps him in picking up the pearls.
Such was his faith in his love and his friendship.
Later, when Bhanumati asked Duryodhana why did he not doubt her?
Duryodhana said, "In a relation there is no scope for doubt, for when doubt settles in there will be no relation. Karna is my best friend and I trust him because I have faith that he will never break my trust."
